Aloha beautiful!
I was thinking of starting a #healtyalternatives series in which I will write a shorter blog post about healthy alternatives that I love. It can be related to beauty, fitness, diet or anything I come across.
What do guys think?
I would like to start my #healthyalternatives with a bit of a difficult topic – DEODORANTS!
We all need them and we all use them. Neutralizing underarm odors and absorbing wetness may be the most basic requirements we have for a deodorant.
However, I have a few more 🙂 The sweat glands in your armpit absorb chemicals right away and release them into other parts of your body. Thus, I try to stay away from aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens and phthalates based deodorants/antiperspirants.
A lot of the commonly available deodorants however do use aluminum-based compounds to neutralize odor and absorb wetness. According to a few studies, these deodorants may temporary plug within the sweat duct and if applied often, aluminum is absorbed by the skin and may cause an hormonal imbalance.
So, I have been on the hunt for an ALL NATURAL deodorant that ACTUALLY works for a while now! And trust me if I tell you that I tried a lot of them, none of them satisfying me completely.
I workout a lot and have a busy lifestyle. Smelly and wet armpits are the last things I want to worry about. So, when I came across Schmidt’s all natural deodorants, I first was a bit hesitant but I wanted to give them a try as they are
are FREE of aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens and phthalates and are certified vegan and cruelty free.
I bought it from iHerb and paid 9$.

Ingredients: Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Citrus bergamia (bergamot) essential oil, Citrus aurantifolia (lime) essential oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) Extract
That sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
Anti-smelly and wetness test:
I put it on in the morning after I woke up and started with an early workout (30 min of HIIT and 30min of ABS) followed by a full day in the sun without reapplying it. (I typically shower after working out but for the purpose of testing the full potential of the deodorant, I didn’t on this day – as I was on the beach during the day :-))
My conclusion:
It definitely passed the anti-smelly and wetness test which surprised me a lot. At the end of the day the fragrance was gone but my armpits were dry and odorless.
They come in different fragrances:
Fragrance free, Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot-Lime, Lavender-Sage and Cedarwood-Juniper
I have tried them all and my favorite by far is the Bergamot-Lime one (and I am typically the flowery, feminine type of person). It smells fresh and revitalizing.
I first bought the deodorant that comes in a little jar and has a spatula inside. You are supposed to scrape out a bit of the pomade and rub it in between your fingers and finally apply them on to your armpits.

To be honest, this didn’t appeal too much to me, because I don’t like having deodorant all over my hands (it’s a waxy texture and thus not too easy to wash off); plus it took some extra time in the morning (every minute counts ;-)) However, I continued using it because it worked so well.
Luckily, they recently came out with these deodorants in stick form and I LOVE this so much more.
Please let me know below which healthy alternative you love! 🙂
Have a positive day!

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I truly appreciate this! So get ready for a lot of healthy alternatives 🙂
I feel like we put so many chemicals on or in our bodies (and a lot of time we don’t even know it) and I personally want to be a little bit more conscious about this, so when I find something that works I would love to share it with you and get your input.
Have a lovely day and thank you so much for stopping by.

Whoa! Natural deodorant – that sounds great as normal deodorants always use alcohol in it which in turn try to irritate skin sometimes and that’s why I always try to use moisturiser before spraying on the deodorant and hence, in that way it doesn’t irritate my skin.

I know….it is such a delicate area and especially if you are freshly shaven under your arms, alcohol tend to irritate your underarms.
More harmful though is the aluminum that is used by a lot of deodorants – it is linked to breast cancer. That is why I was on the hunt for a healthy alternative that actually works and I love this one.

Ohh how nice that you are using them as well. What was it that was difficult at the beginning for you? The consistency?
Thank you so much for your support! I really appreciate that and love to see you here on my blog 🙂

It was just the fact I was sticking my finger in what felt like candle wax! But if I place it in my bathroom when I shower, it warms it up and it goes on so much easier!

Are you using the jar? I didn’t like that either but they came out with those deodorants in stick form.

Yeah I’m using the jar! It came in a beauty box so I thought I would give it a try! I especially like these deodorants because they are ezcema friendly. I can’t use artifical scents so the fact that this is natural is perfect!

Oh ok. I love them because they are free of aluminum which I am after and the fact that they work so well is perfect.
If that is the only issue you have – they have them now in stick form as well 🙂

Your comment made me smile a lot! Thanks a lot 🙂 I had the same issue with a lot of deodorants which would me itch so much. I really love this one – and it is so effective.
BTW: you have one of the cutest kids ever!!
Have a lovely day and thanks so much for your support!

Great article. I can truly relate to this paragraph below
“A lot of the commonly available deodorants however do use aluminum-based compounds to neutralize odor and absorb wetness. According to a few studies, these deodorants may temporary plug within the sweat duct and if applied often, aluminum is absorbed by the skin and may cause an hormonal imbalance.”
This not only happened to me but it went further than a hormonal imbalance. The aluminum compounds backed up under my right arm that I developed a large mass/cyst from it that was painful and very scary. Thank you for educating others and sharing this product.
My Best,
Jamie

Aloha Jamie,
thank you so much for your kind comment and encouragement. Thanks so much also for sharing your personal experience. I can imagine what a shock this must have been and I am glad to hear that it was ‘only’ a cyst.
I feel like that we are already exposed to so many chemicals and pollution ( no matter if we want or not) that it is important to make healthy choices wherever and whenever we can.
I really do like this deodorant a lot and it is working so well. I hope you will enjoy it as well 🙂
With much aloha,
Claudia

This just made my day! Thank you so much for reposting my article!
It means a lot to me because this is a topic that is close to my heart and I feel it is not talked about enough. Even if it makes only one woman stop using aluminum based deodorants – we’ll have succeeded.
Much aloha!

Great post. It is so iffy trying natural deodorants (even though I fully support the idea) but I have yet to find one that really works! Thanks for the suggestions 🙂 xo J

I totally agree that there are a lot out there which just don’t do the job. However, I feel like this is such an important topic (especially for us women).
This is by far the best I have ever tried. If you give it a go, let me know what you think about it.
Have a lovely day and thank you so much for your support!

Great post. I too tried this deodorant, in the jar form, but an alternate scent and it is so dense and hard to apply. I was happy to find that it is now available in a stick form! I’m a huge fan of Pacifica natural deodorant wipes. Easy to apply and smell delightful. They work better than I expected! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing. The wipes sound really good – especially for when you are on the go or the plane.
I agree – I wasn’t the biggest fan of the deodorant in the jar…luckily they came out with the stick form.
